Five Golden Rules in Gemba

his is our First article based on the Book “Gemba Kaizen by Masaaki Imai”  Gemba means the actual place where the work is done. For a manufacturing firm the Gemba is the shop floor, for a hospital the Gemba is the Treatment wards, reception and Operation theatre and for a Cinema theatre Gemba is the ticket counter, movie hall etc.

The essence of Gemba Kaizen is, to do improvements in Gemba where the actual work gets done. These improvements will have a big impact on the organisation The Five Golden Rules of Gemba Management

  1. When a problem arises, we must go to Gemba first. This will give a clear understanding of the problem and help to find the appropriate solution
  2. Check the Gembutsu- Relevant objects to find the possible causes of the problem. The possible causes should be classified into 5 M’s (Man, Machine, Material, Methods, and Measurements)
  3. We should take the temporary countermeasures on the spot
  4. Find the root cause using 5 why analysis and Pareto analysis
  5. Standardize the corrections done to prevent a recurrence.
